Which football coaching badge should you start with?

Programme overviewFor ages 16+, Introduction to Coaching Football is the starting qualification on England’s main football coaching pathway. It replaced the old FA Level 1 in Coaching Football.

For ages 16+, Introduction to Coaching Football is the starting qualification on England’s main football coaching pathway. It replaced the old FA Level 1 in Coaching Football.

Before enrolling, you need current safeguarding and first-aid qualifications accepted by The FA. The course itself is online and introduces session planning, player development and matchday coaching.

If you want to explore coaching before taking that step, EE Playmaker by England Football is a free introductory course available from age 14. It helps you get involved in supporting football activities and is separate from the main coaching qualification.

At Steven Gerrard Academy, you can develop your coaching knowledge through your BTEC qualification in the classroom while working towards the first steps on this pathway. Your tutors and coaches help you understand how your studies, coaching badges and practical experience fit together.

Football coaching badges in England explained

Overview

The main pathway runs from Introduction to Coaching Football through UEFA C, UEFA B, UEFA A and UEFA Pro.

Each stage builds on the previous one. Meeting the minimum age does not automatically make you eligible: higher qualifications also require earlier badges, suitable coaching roles and experience.

EE Playmaker: explore coaching before your first badgeMinimum age: 14

Minimum age: 14

This free online course is an accessible introduction to helping out in football.

You will explore communication, inclusion and ways to support enjoyable sessions. It is useful if you want to volunteer alongside a coach and find out whether coaching is something you enjoy.

You could complete EE Playmaker before joining SGA or alongside the early stages of your studies. It gives you a foundation to build on when observing coaches and supporting practical activities.

Introduction to Coaching Football: your first coaching qualificationMinimum age: 16

Minimum age: 16

This is the first main qualification for new football coaches in England.

Through online learning and webinars, you will develop the basics of organising sessions, supporting players and creating a positive football experience.

You must hold an in-date Safeguarding Children qualification and an accepted FA medical qualification, such as Introduction to First Aid in Football.

For most school leavers beginning their coaching journey, this is the qualification to work towards first.

It also connects closely with what you learn through a Level 3 BTEC at Steven Gerrard Academy. Planning activities, communicating with players and reviewing your coaching are skills you can develop through both your studies and practical experience.

UEFA C Diploma: develop your practical coachingMinimum age: 16

Minimum age: 16

The UEFA C Diploma is the next stage after Introduction to Coaching Football. It replaced the old FA Level 2 in Coaching Football.

Combining online support with face-to-face learning, it helps you apply coaching ideas to the players you work with.

To enrol, you need:
Introduction to Coaching Football or the previous FA Level 1.
Current safeguarding and first-aid qualifications.
An active coaching role with a team in a season-long competition in England.
To be living in England.

The course normally runs over approximately 16-20 weeks.

As you gain experience with Steven Gerrard Academy, UEFA C could become a next step alongside your studies or after completing your BTEC qualification. Your local team can help you explore whether your coaching role meets the entry requirements and what further experience you need.

UEFA B Diploma: progress with experienceMinimum age: 18

Minimum age: 18

The UEFA B Diploma develops your understanding of players, team performance and the demands of competitive football.

Entry requirements include holding UEFA C, having at least 12 months’ coaching experience after UEFA C and actively coaching a team in a season-long competition in England. You must also meet the course’s safeguarding, first-aid and coaching-context requirements.

Coaches generally need to work with players aged 12 or above, with an exception for those coaching in a boys’ or girls’ professional academy environment.

The course normally takes 9-12 months. An 18 or 19-year-old may be eligible if they already meet all the requirements.

The experience you build while studying at Steven Gerrard Academy can help you prepare for this level of coaching. Keep a record of the sessions you support, the responsibilities you take on and the feedback you receive as you develop.

UEFA A Diploma: an advanced career goalMinimum age: 18, with substantial additional requirements

Minimum age: 18, with substantial additional requirements

UEFA A focuses on advanced coaching and player development in the 11-a-side game.

Applicants must have held UEFA B for at least a year and gained at least a year’s subsequent experience as a head or assistant coach in 11-a-side football. Selection also considers the level and context in which you coach.

For someone starting at 16-19, UEFA A is a longer-term ambition. Your first priority is developing the qualifications and practical experience that can eventually take you there.

UEFA Pro Diploma: the highest professional coaching qualification

UEFA Pro prepares experienced coaches for leadership and management at the highest levels of football.

Applicants need to have held UEFA A for at least 12 months and meet demanding professional-game experience requirements.

This completes the main pathway, but it is a future career milestone rather than a starting option for school leavers.

Your Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development develops your understanding of coaching, player development and the wider sports industry.

Your FA-accredited coaching badges

Your FA-accredited coaching badges help you build football-specific coaching knowledge.

Your practical placements

Your practical placements give you opportunities to apply what you learn.

Together, these can help you build a recognised qualification, coaching experience and a stronger understanding of your next career step.

For example, you might study how to plan an activity during your BTEC, explore session design through a coaching qualification and then apply those ideas during a supported placement.

That connection between learning and delivery helps you understand how to coach different players and improve your approach.

A fully funded Level 3 BTEC

Study towards a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development over two years, worth up to 168 UCAS points depending on your final grades.

Do I need to have played professional football to become a coach?

Is a BTEC the same as an FA coaching badge?

No. A BTEC is an academic and vocational qualification. FA and UEFA coaching qualifications form a separate football-specific pathway.

Will my placement qualify me for UEFA C or UEFA B?

These courses require a suitable active coaching position, and UEFA B also requires experience gained after UEFA C.

What grades do I need for Steven Gerrard Academy?

Entry requirements depend on the qualification. For the Level 3 route, applicants would ideally achieve five GCSEs at grades 4-9.
