Football Coach Course Guide for 16-19

Minimum age: 14 This free online course is an accessible introduction to helping out in football. You will explore communication, inclusion and ways to support enjoyable sessions. It is useful if you want to volunteer alongside a coach and find out whether coaching is something you enjoy. You could complete EE Playmaker before joining SGA or alongside the early stages of your studies. It gives you a foundation to build on when observing coaches and supporting practical activities.

Minimum age: 16 This is the first main qualification for new football coaches in England. Through online learning and webinars, you will develop the basics of organising sessions, supporting players and creating a positive football experience. You must hold an in-date Safeguarding Children qualification and an accepted FA medical qualification, such as Introduction to First Aid in Football. For most school leavers beginning their coaching journey, this is the qualification to work towards first. It also connects closely with what you learn through a Level 3 BTEC at Steven Gerrard Academy. Planning activities, communicating with players and reviewing your coaching are skills you can develop through both your studies and practical experience.

Minimum age: 16 The UEFA C Diploma is the next stage after Introduction to Coaching Football. It replaced the old FA Level 2 in Coaching Football. Combining online support with face-to-face learning, it helps you apply coaching ideas to the players you work with. To enrol, you need: • Introduction to Coaching Football or the previous FA Level 1. • Current safeguarding and first-aid qualifications. • An active coaching role with a team in a season-long competition in England. • To be living in England. The course normally runs over approximately 16-20 weeks. As you gain experience with Steven Gerrard Academy, UEFA C could become a next step alongside your studies or after completing your BTEC qualification. Minimum age: 18 The UEFA B Diploma develops your understanding of players, team performance and the demands of competitive football. Entry requirements include holding UEFA C, having at least 12 months’ coaching experience after UEFA C and actively coaching a team in a season-long competition in England. You must also meet the course’s safeguarding, first-aid and coaching-context requirements. Coaches generally need to work with players aged 12 or above, with an exception for those coaching in a boys’ or girls’ professional academy environment. The course normally takes 9-12 months. An 18 or 19-year-old may be eligible if they already meet all the requirements. The experience you build while studying at Steven Gerrard Academy can help you prepare for this level of coaching. Keep a record of the sessions you support, the responsibilities you take on and the feedback you receive as you develop.

Minimum age: 18, with substantial additional requirements UEFA A focuses on advanced coaching and player development in the 11-a-side game. Applicants must have held UEFA B for at least a year and gained at least a year’s subsequent experience as a head or assistant coach in 11-a-side football. Selection also considers the level and context in which you coach. For someone starting at 16-19, UEFA A is a longer-term ambition. Your first priority is developing the qualifications and practical experience that can eventually take you there.

UEFA Pro prepares experienced coaches for leadership and management at the highest levels of football. Applicants need to have held UEFA A for at least 12 months and meet demanding professional-game experience requirements. This completes the main pathway, but it is a future career milestone rather than a starting option for school leavers. Every coaching journey begins with learning the basics and putting them into practice. That is where your time at SGA can make a difference.
